Salman Khan’s upcoming war drama Battle Of Galwan has officially been retitled Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, a move that has quickly become one of the biggest Bollywood talking points on March 16, 2026. The title change was announced by Salman Khan Films along with a new poster, signalling a notable shift in the film’s public positioning.

The film is inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh, a subject that had already drawn political and media attention ever since the project was first unveiled. Earlier, the teaser of Battle Of Galwan had triggered criticism from Chinese state media, which accused the film of “distorting facts,” turning the movie into a sensitive cross-border cultural flashpoint even before release.
According to multiple reports, the renaming comes at a time when India-China ties are witnessing a relative thaw, and the makers appear to have chosen a more reflective and less confrontational title. Compared to the original name, Maatrubhumi places stronger emphasis on patriotism, sacrifice and peace, especially with the tagline “May War Rest in Peace.”
Reports also suggest that the earlier title had sparked sensitivity and controversy because of the historical and geopolitical weight attached to the Galwan clash. By moving to Maatrubhumi, the makers seem to be broadening the emotional appeal of the film while avoiding direct title-level provocation linked to a real military conflict. This is an inference based on how the title change is being described in coverage and should not be taken as an official statement from the makers beyond the rebranding itself.
Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the film stars Salman Khan in the lead, with reports also naming Chitrangda Singh in a key role. While the new title has been confirmed, the makers have not yet announced the release date, leaving fans waiting for the next major update.
With Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, Salman Khan’s film has now taken on a new identity one that still carries the emotional backdrop of Galwan, but presents itself through a more universal message of peace and national pride. Whether the title change helps soften controversy or creates even more curiosity, the film has once again pushed itself into the headlines.
